OK, so maybe you’ve tried getting treatment for your addiction before, and it didn’t work.  Or maybe you haven’t sought help, but you’re worried that you might fail.

How do you know if you’re ready to approach treatment and recovery successfully? Here are some thoughts:

  1. You’re tired of the way you’re living now. You aren’t enjoying life. You feel like you’re stuck. And you may even worry that this feeling could get worse.
  2. You’ve damaged or destroyed relationships with others. This could be a spouse, children, work colleagues, or family members you care about. Your addiction has caused you to hurt or inconvenience others. And that bothers you, but the addiction is keeping you from repairing these bonds.
  3. Your health is suffering. Often, this is of the least concern to someone battling an addiction. But as health deteriorates and addiction becomes more of a problem, you may decide that you’ve had enough–before it’s too late.
  4. You’re missing your dreams. An addiction is debilitating, but not always physically. Even though your body may be coping, chances are your dreams and aspirations are not. Reaching your goals takes an investment of time and energy, and addiction diverts these resources. You may not notice at first, but eventually you see that you can’t handle both the addiction and what you truly want.
  5. You notice a different resolve within yourself. This may be a vague feeling (maybe just barely there), but you begin to think that you truly want to make a change in your life.

Now, we know from experience that even a person with strong reasons for entering treatment and being successful at it may still fail. Addiction is difficult and recovering is ongoing. The longer you work at recovery, the more manageable it becomes. But it may not get easier.
